Z-I.2. Laboratory for Determination of Residues

Laboratory for Determination of Residues is engaged in determination of residues of prohibited substances, veterinary medicinal products and contaminants in foodstuffs of animal origin and in animal feed. The analytical program of the Laboratory consists of orientation qualitative microbiological and quantitative enzyme immunoassay methods (ELISA), as well as atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and liquid and gas chromatography with mass detection (LC-MS-MS, GC-MS and GC-MS-MS).
The Laboratory conducts the following analyses:
·    prohibited substances: chloramphenicol, nitrofuran metabolites, dapsone
·    veterinary medicinal products:
a) antibacterial substances: penicillins, cephalosporins, streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin, tetracyclines (tetracycline, oxytetracycline, doxycycline, chlortetracycline), neomycin, gentamicin, quinolones (enrofloxacin, flumequine, marbofloxacin), tylosin, sulphonamides
b) antihelminitics (ivermectin, abamectin, levamisole)
c) coccidiostatics (amprolium, clopidol, halofuginone, robenidine, nequinate, toltrazuril, toltrazuril-sulphone, decoquinate, salinomycin, maduramicin, semduramicin, monensin,  narasin, lasalocid, diclazuril, nicarbazin
d) sedatives (azaperol and azaperone)
c) corticosteroids (dexamethasone, flumethasone, betamethasone, prednisolone)
·    contaminants:
a) chemical elements (arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, copper, selenium, zinc, iron, cobalt, chrome, etc.)
b) organochlorine pesticides (23 substances)
c) organophosphorous pesticides (25 substances)
d) pyretroids and carbamates (15 substances)
e) benzo(a)pyrene
f) aflatoxin M1
·     dyes: malachite and leucomalachite green
·     type of meat

The Laboratory takes part in three monitoring programs defined with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development: National Residue Monitoring Program, Imported Shipments Test and Analysis Monitoring Plan and Animal Feed Monitoring Program.

In April 2010, the Laboratory was declared National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Residues by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, within the scope of the National Residue Monitoring Program. In 2011, based on the decisions of the Food Safety and Quality Directorate and the Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, the Laboratory was appointed Official and Reference Laboratory for the fields of determination of residues of veterinary medications and contaminants in food of animal origin.
In cooperation with similar research and professional institutions in Croatia, as well as similar laboratories and EU reference laboratories in Austria, Italy, Slovenia and France, the Laboratory is developing its analytical methodology and research activities.
